Karen Oakman graduated Magna Cum Laude from California Lutheran University, receiving her Bachelor of Science degrees in Criminal Justice and Political Science, during which time she volunteered at the San Diego District Attorney’s Office. She then graduated from California Western School of Law in 2010, receiving her Juris Doctorate degree.
During law school, Karen interned at the San Diego Office of the Public Defender in the Profile Homicide Unit, the San Diego Alternate Public Defender’s Office, and the Law Office of Timothy Scott. After law school, Karen participated in the post-bar program offered at the San Diego Public Defender’s Office. During these experiences, she was given enriching opportunities to represent clients in court, learn the nuances of misdemeanor and felony practice, and sharpen her trial practice skills.
Karen also worked as a volunteer for the non-profit California Western Community Law Project for nearly two years. This responsibility allowed her to work side-by-side with attorneys as they offered advice in the fields of family, criminal, bankruptcy, immigration, and consumer law.
